Exercise Science Major
The exercise science program at Manchester University has many classes ranging in content available. The following list contains the classes that I felt best suited my needs for the future of my personal development as well as professional development.
BIOL 202 - Fundamentals of Human Anatomy
A regional approach to the study of human structure, with the emphasis being on the basic structural organization of the human body, underlying anatomical principles, anatomical details appropriate for allied health students, and clinical application of anatomy. BIOL 202 L - Fundamentals of Human Anatomy Lab Laboratory course to complement BIOL 202, Fundamentals of Human Anatomy, consisting of lab work in identifying anatomical structures in humans. Emphasis on musculoskeletal, circulatory, and nervous systems. This course has a prerequisite of prior completion of or concurrent enrollment in BIOL 202. |
BIOL 204 - Fundamentals of Human Physiology
BIOL 204 is a course designed to teach the anatomy and physiology of the major body systems. As well as give students an understanding of how the organ systems work together with an overall theme of the maintenance of homeostasis. BIOL 204 L - Fundamentals of Human Physiology Lab
BIOL 204 Lab is to better help students understand the anatomy and physiology of the major human body systems. This course will demonstrate various body systems and how they interrelate and have a co-dependence on each other. |
BIOL 422 - Vertebrate Physiology
BIOL 422 L - Vertebrate Physiology Lab
BIOL 422 L - Vertebrate Physiology Lab
CHEM 111 - General Chemistry I
CHEM 111 is a course designed to demonstrate a systematic understanding of aspects of the natural world through learning the content, vocabulary, and interrelationships among well-supported scientific theories. Also the course will help students articulate the unique features of scientific methodologies, such as hypothesis testing based on empirical observations, and probabilistic conclusions. CHEM 111 L - General Chemistry I Lab CHEM 111 is a course designed to become familiar with common laboratory techniques, which emphasize the empirical nature of chemistry, and also to cultivate abilities in observation, analysis, critical thinking and communication. |
ESS 103 - Foundations of Physical Education and Sports Science
ESS 103 is an introduction to the historical, philosophical, sociological and psychological foundations that provide the framework for diverse career opportunities in physical education and sport sciences.
|
ESS 325 - Exercise Physiology
An investigation of the physiological adaptations (both acute and chronic) which occur as a result of physical activity combined with exposure to environmental conditions. The physiological basis for common training techniques will be explored. An introduction to research in health and human performance is presented and an original research project is a required component of the course. ESS 325 L - Exercise Physiology Lab ESS 325 Lab is a laboratory designed to illicit experience in data collection and analysis of human physiological responses to both acute and chronic exercise. |
ESS 410 - Administration of Health and Physical Activity Programs
ESS 476 - Internship in Health/Fitness/Wellness
STAT 110 - Statistical Methods / MATH 210 Statistical Analysis
This is a paper in statistical methods for students from the sciences, including students studying biological science, social sciences, and sport science as well as those studying mathematics and statistics. The paper covers data, an introduction to probability, binomial and normal distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, contingency tables for categorical data, simple linear regression, introduction to multiple regression, analysis of variance. At the end of the course you should be able to make use of a wide variety of techniques in the design and analyse your own research studies. |
Exercise Science Electives
ESS 113 - Emergency Care for the Physically Active
This course is to develop understanding, knowledge, and skills in the care, treatment, and prevention of athletic injuries.
|
ESS 150 - Injury and Illness Prevention for the Physically Active
The course will define the profession of athletic training and introduce places of employment for athletic trainers as well as introduce the student to key concepts that are essential for future courses in athletic training.
ESS 150 L - Injury and Illness Prevention for the Physically Active Lab
This course teaches, with hands-on experience, of the Athletic Training program's competencies and basic taping and bracing skills. |
ESS 262 - Health Concepts
An introduction of basic health and wellness concepts as a foundation for health professionals, including athletic trainers, fitness specialists, teachers, and therapists. Attention will be given to topics such as growth and development; mental and emotional health; nutrition; personal health; and alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. |
